Chat & Chowder | America In The Arctic
June 12
Foley & Lardner LLP
111 Huntington Avenue, Suite 2500
Boston, MA 02199
6:00 - 7:30pm EDT
Free and open to the public
Join World Boston for this installment of our popular Chat & Chowder series, featuring Professor of National Security at the U.S. Naval War College and former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Mary Thompson-Jones. Dr. Thompson-Jones will discuss her new book, America in the Arctic: Foreign Policy and Competition in the Melting North.
America in the Arctic offers a timely and compelling case for why the United States must deepen its commitment to a region threatened by climate change and geopolitical rivalry.
Chat & Chowder programs are an excellent opportunity to engage with expert speakers and to network with other globally-oriented participants in an informal environment. Each event features a presentation, audience Q&A, dedicated time for networking, and (of course!) a selection of chowders and beverages.
Thanks to the generous support of The Lowell Institute, Chat & Chowder is now free of charge for all participants (Zoom live-streams remain free as well). We sincerely appreciate The Lowell Institute’s commitment to our mission, as well as the support of our venue, Foley & Lardner LLP.
Designing Resilience: A Climate Creatives Meetup
June 12
Time Out Market Boston
401 Park Drive, Boston, MA 02215
6:00 - 8:00pm EDT
Free and open to the public
Being in the climate space — especially as a creative — isn’t always easy. But that’s why community matters.
This month, Climate Designers is celebrating climate resiliency. Despite the setbacks, people are still showing up and doing the work— and we want to gather to recognize that strength and spirit.
Join us for a casual meetup at Time Out Market Boston!
Come hang out, grab a drink or bite, and connect with other designers and creatives who care about the climate. We’ll have a simple (and fun) activity where you can share your thoughts on climate resiliency in the Boston area—and how we can all keep going, together.
No pressure, just good people, good vibes, and real conversations.
Hope to see you there!

How fossilized reefs hold clues to the survival of corals in the Anthropocene
With rising global temperatures, pollution, overfishing, ocean acidification, and other problems caused by humans, there’s no question that today’s coral reefs are in trouble. As predictions about the future of these ecosystems grow increasingly dire, scientists are looking in an unlikely place for new ways to save corals: the past. The reefs of yesteryear faced challenges too, from changing sea level to temperature shifts, and understanding how they survived and when they faltered can help guide our efforts to help ensure a future for reefs.
A breathtaking journey of scientific discovery, Reefs of Time reveals how lessons from the past can help us to chart a path forward for coral reefs struggling for survival in an age of climate crisis and mass extinction.
