The Secret Score of Birds
Music, Nature, and Art in Harmony
Presented by Shared Habitat Earth at Laconia Gallery | Sunday, June 29, 2025
Visitors to Laconia Gallery on Sunday, June 29 were treated to a rare sensory experience as Shared Habitat Earth presented The Secret Score of Birds, a multimedia concert and lecture blending science, sound, and art. The performance featured German-French composer Alexander Liebermann and internationally acclaimed flutist Yulia Musayelyan, drawing the audience into the nuanced world of bird songs re-imagined through classical music.
Liebermann, known for his precise and poetic transcriptions of birdsong, opened the concert by sharing his process of translating the complex, fleeting sounds of wildlife into musical notation. His work reveals not just the melody of birds, but their rhythm, structure, and emotion, turning nature’s language into a sophisticated score.
Flutist Yulia Musayelyan brought these transcriptions vividly to life, performing with nuance and depth. Her interpretations—sometimes playful, sometimes haunting—allowed the audience to hear birds in new ways: not just as background to the natural world, but as composers in their own right.
The event was not only a concert, but an invitation to listen differently. As part of Shared Habitat Earth’s mission to connect art and environmental awareness, The Secret Score of Birds underscored the importance of tuning in to the world around us—especially to the creatures with whom we share our habitats.
Set against the backdrop of Shared Habitat Earth’s summer exhibition, the concert offered a perfect harmony of sound and vision. The gallery remained open following the event for attendees to explore artworks inspired by nature and environmental interdependence.
The Shared Habitat Earth exhibition at Laconia Gallery (433 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118) runs through August 2, and is open during First Fridays (6–8 PM) and by appointment.
